Housing the Homeless

Alexandra House

Alexandra House is a new project currently under construction. It replaces our old hostel 'Cornerstone' and will create accommodation for 80 homeless people in a mixture of self-contained studios and specially designed shared flats for 2 people. The new building, like the old, will be 10 storeys high but includes two floors of training, recreational and office space using innovative and contemporary design approaches. The contractor is Warings, part of the Bouygues Group, and they are using a system of off-site modular fabrication originally developed for student housing which will allow us to complete the building by March 2012.

Alexandra House will provide accommodation for single homeless men and women between the ages of 16-65 in the London Borough of Croydon. Residents stay on average, 6 to 12 months, depending on their circumstances. The experiences before coming to this service are varied, some may have experienced family or relationship breakdowns, be ex-offenders, have substance misuse issues, be unemployed or require additional support with education and training. The aim of the project is to support residents in gaining access to income advice, and to assist them in developing their life skills, including accessing training or jobs. The building will be opening during the summer of 2012.
