Domestic Violence

Where to go for help?

If you or your family are in immediate danger always dial 999

Domestic cruelty is all about control. It's more than violence. Some women have said, "I wish he would hit me. It would be easier to handle." Because domestic violence can also be emotional or psychological. Whatever form it takes, it is all about controlling somebody else and making them feel bad. It’s often difficult to admit it’s happening, especially when it involves someone that you fell in love with. But domestic violence ruins lives, bodies, minds, - yours and your children’s.

Have the courage to tell someone. Sharing your hurt is the first step to stopping it for good. Medical professionals are one option. Tell your doctor or nurse practitioner. Or, tell your clergy/religious leader, a social worker, or someone who works with a programme against domestic cruelty.

There are confidential hotlines in each London borough. In Croydon you can call The Family Justice Centre, or Women’s Aid, or a number of agencies. They are all working together to help you.

Tell someone you trust. Just start the conversation.

I live in the borough of Croydon

Contact any of the following agencies:-

  • The Family Justice Centre - Tel: 020 8688 010
  • Women's Aid - Tel: 020 8679 8848
  • Victim Support - Tel: 020 8681 7711
  • Croydon Council Housing - Tel: 020 8125 6100

There is a special scheme in Croydon where all the agencies work together to help you move away from the person who is hurting you.

They will help find you an alternative place to live for you (and your children if you have any), they will also be able to help with things like taking legal steps to evict the person who is perpetrating domestic violence from your family home (they do this through a fast track process in the Croydon Family Court).

One of the places that Croydon Council and the Family Justice Centre refer to is South London YMCA’s Crocus House. This accommodation is safe as the address is kept confidential at all times. You and your family will be supported to think through your options, take legal action where appropriate (if you want to) and start to plan your future in safety. Crocus house will also support and guide you in relation to finding move on accommodation. Due to the confidential address no one will know where you are. Find out more information about Crocus House.
