SLYMCA Proposals for Sumner Road

Sumner Road

South London YMCA (SLYMCA) is developing proposals for a new facility at 57-61 Sumner Road and is expected to make a planning application in the next few months.

Subject to planning consent, the facility would provide support and temporary accommodation for up to 44 young people (aged 16-19). Its purpose is to help homeless, often vulnerable young people who may otherwise be placed in inappropriate emergency bed and breakfast accommodation while their needs are assessed.

Their initial stay would be for up to six weeks with a referral to one of a number of possible options as follows:

  • After some mediation, returning to the family home
  • Supported lodgings in the community
  • Remaining in the higher support long term accommodation at Sumner Road
  • Making a commitment to training and moving on to the new Millennium Foyer at Sylvan Hill or Elizabeth House in West Croydon.

The initial design proposals were presented for community consultation in February 2010 to find out what local people thought. Since then the design team has worked hard to revise and improve the designs taking into account as far as possible the feedback received during the consultation.

A public exhibition of the revised proposals took place at Christ Church, Sumner Road, West Croydon at the beginning of June.

An updated Feedback Report is available for download below.

Thank you to all those who have participated in the consultation process in the past six months.  We will keep you informed regarding the planning application.
